Investigations

Public-interest investigations.

An investigation is original work that establishes facts not yet known or not yet verified, with evidence readers can assess.

01Criteria

What makes a piece an investigation

  1. Original research

It does not repackage published news: it produces new findings from documents, data or testimony.

  2. Traceable evidence

Every relevant claim is linked to evidence described in a verifiable way.

  3. Right to respond

Those named receive the questions before publication, and their response is reported.

  4. Stated limits

The text states what could not be established and which questions remain open.

  5. Human approval

Every investigation has identifiable editors who approve its publication.

02Possible outcomes

  • Documenting an abuse or a responsibility.
  • Refuting an unfounded allegation.
  • Verifying that a stated result has been achieved.

The outcome depends on the evidence gathered, not on the initial hypothesis.
